Former foster child starts mentor program
WASHINGTON — Courtney Stewart was shocked at what he saw while delivering cleaning supplies to a school here in 2005: loud and disrespectful students, only half of whom wore the required uniform.

"I went to the director and said, 'You need a lot of help,' " says Stewart, owner of Stewart's Cleaning Service. He began volunteering as a mentor to students and decided to do more to help the kids in the neighborhood where he grew up in a foster family.

Eager to help others stay out of trouble, he came up with a business plan for a mentoring program. He gathered four friends in his basement to craft a mission statement, file incorporation papers and brainstorm the organization's name, Mentoring Works 2. The "2" represents the two people, adult and child, in a mentoring relationship.

His program offers a safe place for kids to go after school to eat, play games and get help with homework. He has about 40 volunteers, many of them students from nearby Howard University.

"He's helped to get some of the kids to stop jumping people and beating them up," says Darren Jones, head of the Pleasant Plains Civic Association. Eric Aull, 10, says he started going to the program because "I had nothing to do." With the group, he went swimming, visited Six Flags, served food to the homeless and learned to inline skate.

Stewart says he's not good at fundraising, so he uses his own money to cover 80% of the expenses, including $2,000 monthly rent and $200 weekly for food.

"It's definitely a sacrifice," he says, "but it's one I can make, up to a point."

Fourth Annual Block Party/Health Fair
WASHINGTON, DC –
The MentoringWorks2, Inc. (hereinafter referred to as MW2, Inc,) One to One Mentoring/After-school Tutoring/Summer Mentoring Program for at-risk youth.  I am writing on behalf of MW2, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (#06-1782425).  MW2, Inc. has been providing services and so much more in Ward 1 in the Washington D.C. area since 2006.  Through our mentoring program, we provide youth and their families with the appropriate resources and services through our partnerships with the Columbia Heights Shaw/Family Support Collaborative, Metropolitan Police Department and other government and community base organizations. MW2, Inc. will have it’s Fourth Annual Block Party/Health Fair on July 10, 2010 at 11th & Monroe Street N.W. WDC (12pm-7pm).  Our goal this year is to reach out to every family, school, government agency and CBO in the Ward 1 Community.  In years past, we have had a lot of success with this event and this year we want it to be the biggest and best ever.  We will have professional health screenings, HIV testing, TB testing and lots of fun.   We have a minimal fundraising goal and would appreciate your support in the form of a tax-deductible donation.   We have already started fundraising by accepting small donations from employees and volunteers.  I have already made a personal contribution of $200.  Your contribution of any amount or donation of food (i.e. sodas, waters, ice, hamburgers, hotdogs and chips, etc.) is greatly needed to help our program reach its goal in helping less fortunate kids have a great summer event.  We look forward to whatever support you can provide.   If you require additional information about MW2, please contact me and I will be happy to answer any questions you may have.  Thank you in advance for your support,

Courtney Stewart
